Fantakuchen: German cake with Fanta: Fantakuchen is a German cake typically flavoured with fizzy Fanta. Today, this dessert is mainly served at children’s birthday parties and at Karneval celebrations in the country. It may be called by different names like “Fanta cake,” “German orange soda cake” or “Fanta sponge cake.” Fanta itself was invented in Nazi Germany as a last resort to rescue the Coca-Cola company from massive financial losses. That is how it became a popular drink in the country. Here’s an easy recipe to make this German-style Fanta cake:

1.
Preheat the oven to approximately 170°C or 340°F.
2.
Grease the bottom of your pan with some butter or use parchment paper. You can opt for a 9 by 13-inch pan.
3.
Mix the flour and baking powder in a bowl. If you want additional flavour, you can also add a bit of orange zest here.
4.
Whisk the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract together. Add the oil and Fanta and flour to this mixture.
5.
Alternate between these wet and dry ingredients, starting with the flour. This technique will allow them to bind together better.
6.
Ensure that all elements have combined properly, but don’t let the fizz of the soda die out.
7.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for around 22-30 minutes.
8.
Use the age-old backing hack of inserting a toothpick to check if the cake is baked. It should come out clean.
9.
Remove the cake from the tray and allow it to cool before adding any toppings.
10.
To make the icing, mix the sieved icing sugar and Fanta in a bowl and keep stirring till it dissolves.
11.
Once the icing is ready, spread it over the cake evenly and let it drizzle down the sides. You can add sprinkles, nuts or orange zest on top to enhance it. Instead of icing, you may also use heavy cream or whipped cream.
